What to Expect From Crantock
Crantock is a small and characterful Cornish village that slows you right down the moment you arrive. The village leads down towards Crantock Beach, a beautiful stretch of golden sand at the mouth of the Gannel Estuary.
Behind the beach, dunes and grassland rise towards Rushy Green, while the South West Coast Path continues around West Pentire and on to the secluded cove of Porth Joke, known to everyone locally simply as Polly Joke.
Crantock is quieter than neighbouring Newquay, but you won’t feel cut off. Newquay is only a short drive away, and Padstow, St Ives, Truro and many of Cornwall’s best-known attractions can all be visited on a day out during your stay.
A quick heads-up, Cornwall’s roads can get busy in the main school holidays, so build in some extra travel time if you’re coming in July or August. March to May brings longer days, fresh coastal colours and generally quieter footpaths. It’s a lovely time for walking, exploring the village and visiting Cornwall’s gardens before the summer rush kicks in.
Late May and June are particularly special around West Pentire, when the coastal fields can turn into wonderful displays of wildflowers and vivid red poppies. Flowering times vary each year, but when it happens, it’s genuinely worth the trip on its own.
Summer for a traditional beach holiday
June to August offers the longest days and the liveliest holiday atmosphere.
July and August are the busiest months, so book your accommodation and any restaurants you’ve got your eye on well in advance. Crantock Beach can also get properly busy during peak periods, especially around the main car park, but here’s a local tip, guests staying nearby can often have the coast largely to themselves early in the morning and again in the evening, when things quieten right down.
Autumn for surfing, walking and a slower pace

Spend a day on Crantock Beach
Crantock Beach is where most holidays here start. Its broad sands offer room for family games, sunbathing, paddling, bodyboarding and surfing, and low tide reveals even more beach to explore.
Walk to West Pentire and Polly Joke
The stretch of South West Coast Path around West Pentire is one of the area’s real highlights. Give yourself time here, you’ll get far-reaching sea views before the path continues towards Porth Joke, a smaller, more secluded beach surrounded by National Trust land.
There are no facilities at Polly Joke, so bring water and anything else you might need. Wear suitable footwear, keep well back from cliff edges and keep dogs close by near livestock.
Try surfing or paddle sports
